What Is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation, or ICF, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” A coaching relationship is one of equal-footing, in which the coach uses powerful questions and deep listening to help the client discover their path and achieve results. In this way, coaching differs from mentoring or consulting which are based on advice and guidance. In coaching, the coach trusts the client to know what’s best for them, and the role of the coach is to help uncover clients’ wisdom and put it into action to achieve goals. This may sound unusual if you’ve never experienced coaching before, and the results can be astonishing. With all of the misconceptions about what coaching is, it’s important to find a coach that has trained under a certified ICF program and who adheres to the ICF code of ethics.

We often get asked what types of issues we can work through in coaching. We’ve tackled issues ranging from finding better life-work balance, to changing careers, to improving sports performance. Because the relationship is not based on a hierarchy and is not dependent on specific subject matter expertise of the coach, the focus of the coaching engagement can be flexible and will shift and evolve as the client is presented with new challenges or grows into new development areas.

We explore the topic of coaching and dispel some pesky myths in our podcast episode “So What Exactly Is Coaching Anyway?” You can give the episode a listen, or read the transcript. If you have any questions about what coaching could look like for you, we’re here to shed light. Reach out via email or schedule a consultation to learn more.

If you’re looking for more information about how to find and select the right coach for you, take a listen to our podcast episode with coaches Erica D’Eramo and Dr. Anthony Luévanos to hear their thoughts.

From Our Clients

I have been coached by Erica for about four months now. The amount of support she's given me so far has been key to make my career transition from land to offshore drilling operations go as smoothly as possible. She always challenges me with open ended questions in order to help me focus on finding the best answers when I feel lost. She doesn’t limit her support to the professional side, she goes above and beyond and has provided me with great tools to help me deal with anxiety and create a healthy routine while being on board. I have no words to describe how grateful I am to have her while navigating through my new career!

Eliana - Drilling Engineer - Energy

Erica has a gift for gentle probing questions that seem to unblock what was blocked and light up paths to progress. In just a few sessions she helped me tease apart a jumble of bad thinking and get back on track.

ADAM - Founder - Tech Startup

These sessions have helped redefine what personal success means to me, and Erica has held up a light, illuminating ways to achieve the goals that are most impactful for me. No matter your line of work or career trajectory, we can all benefit deeply from this kind of guidance and support

Marie - Regional Sales - fine wine

During my session with Erica she created a comfortable and open environment for me to discuss my current challenges, in turn she asked questions which allowed me to get outside of my own head and see things from a more positive perspective. My session with Erica didn't just provide me with a short-term elevation in mindset, it gave me a new perspective in my professional environment and has allowed me to deal with future challenges more effectively.

Callum - Senior Strategist - SEO

Erica was truly curious, with no agenda, while holding a clear belief in my own resourcefulness. She was equally comfortable providing me space or taking more control. And I always felt held, whether the moment called for more levity or seriousness Erica brought the right energy. She didn't shy away from asking challenging, probing questions but always did so with compassion.

Taylor - Coach, Facilitator, Innovator

Erica is an honest, open, and thoughtful coach. From our first session, Erica made me feel seen and comfortable with opening up. Our conversations made me feel like she could understand my issues or at least see where I was coming from. I walked away from every session with deeper knowledge of myself and how to approach the challenges in my life. I could tell that Erica truly cared about supporting my goals and ensuring that I benefited from the coaching experience.
